  • Carterville Community Unit School District #5. Carterville Community Unit School District No. 5 has an enrollment of 1600 in grades K-12 and is one of the few school districts in Southern Illinois that has been increasing in enrollment the past few years. Annually, Carterville students do exceptionally well on standardized achievement tests. Most grade levels overall rank in the top 10 percent compared to other classes across the country.

  • Herrin Community Unit School District #4. The public school system includes classes from kindergarten through the 12th grade, programs for handicapped, mentally retarded and deaf students, educational television and an adult education program. The high school, accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, offers general education, college preparatory, business, and vocational-technical courses.

  • 5) Johnston City Community Unit School District #1. The Johnston City Community Unit School District #1 is a K-12 district encompassing 83 square miles. The instructional program offers the 1,300 students enrolled a general education curriculum at all levels that meets or exceeds State Board of Education requirements. At the elementary level the program emphasizes reading, mathematics and language. There is remedial help available through the Title I reading and math programs. A sound ìBasicî foundation is provided in the Middle School where there is opportunity for exploration in the elective classes. The High School is fully accredited by the North Central Association. Its program includes a strong college prep strand, a general education strand and a vocational strand. All students have opportunities to supplement their chosen programs with elective classes from any of the strands. Each school has a media center with a collection of print and non-print materials available. Each school is also equipped with computers and other educational equipment. Gifted activities are available at all grade levels. Special education services are available from the Williamson County Special Education District. Pre-kindergarten classes at Jefferson are provided through a Southern Illinois University program. The district also has a quality music program. Band starts in the 4th and 5th grades and continues through the Middle School and High School. Chorus is organized in Grades 6 ≠ 12. The Indian sports program has a tradition of winning and sportsmanship. It includes high school football, basketball for girls and boys in the Middle School and High School, boys baseball and girls softball at the Middle School and High School, girls volleyball at the High School, cheerleaders, pompon squad and twirlers. In 1994-95 the Indians won five Black Diamond Conference Championships. The districtís academic teams have had much success. The math team has placed in the state several times in recent years. J.E.T.S., drafting, scholar bowl and the business teams have also had very good records.

  • Marion Community Unit School District #2. Serving Marion, Creal Springs, Pittsburg, Spillertown and Lake of Egypt.
