Lake of Egypt Country Club Photo

If you love the outdoors and all that it has to offer, you will love Lake of Egypt. From the gorgeous golf course at the Lake of Egypt Country Club (shown to the left) to the excellent fishing and boating that the lake offers, Lake of Egypt is the perfect place to relax by the water or hike, bike, and camp to your heart’s content.

Lake of Egypt is surrounded by Shawnee National Forest. Enjoy photography, hiking, bicycling, picnicking and swimming. Try boating, canoeing, camping, mushroom hunting, berry picking and more. Delight in the abundance of wildlife. In contrast to the gently rolling farm lands to the north, the 270,000 acres of Shawnee National Forest lie in the rough, unglaciated areas of Southern Illinois known as the Ozark and Shawnee Hills. This area between the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers boasts an unusual combination of five natural ecological divisions.

Whitetail deer, squirrels, rabbits, Canada geese, quail, ducks and wild turkeys are hunted in the Shawnee National Forest and at nearby wildlife refuges. Wildlife openings and waterholes are maintained for better wildlife habitation. Hunting season, regulations, hunting licenses, special permits or wildlife stamp information can be obtained from the Illinois Department of Conservation.

This is what one couple, residents of Lake of Egypt, has to say about the area:

“You’ll hate living at Lake of Egypt unless you enjoy watching flights of geese leave the water in unison and soar overhead against an incredibly beautiful sunrise; then return at sunset, gliding softly back to the water without a splash. Some people, I suppose, would not even like to spend time watching the blue heron catching fish in the shallows. And, of course, the moderate year-round weather with four distinct seasons wouldn’t appeal to some folks. And, that’s OK, because otherwise, everyone would want to live here.”
- Bob and Peg Garrett, Lake of Egypt Residents
